February 2025 : Reflections on Eliminating DEI in Public Health

qsweet

The debate around eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) from public health is deeply unsettling. For me, DEI isn't just a set of principles—it’s about ensuring vulnerable communities get the care they need. Removing DEI would feel like taking a step backward in addressing the health disparities that continue to affect marginalized groups.

Why DEI Matters

DEI is vital for recognizing the unique needs of historically overlooked communities. Without it, I fear health outcomes for people of color, lower-income populations, and others will worsen. DEI helps ensure that healthcare systems focus on equity, not just the majority, and that everyone has the chance to thrive.

The Impact of Eliminating DEI

  1. Widening Disparities: Without DEI, marginalized groups may lose out on the attention and resources they desperately need.

  2. Loss of Cultural Competency: DEI fosters understanding of diverse backgrounds in healthcare, which would be lost without it.

  3. Exclusion of Vulnerable Populations: Public health should serve everyone, but removing DEI risks leaving behind those who need help most.

Eliminating DEI in public health threatens the progress we’ve made in creating a more equitable system. We need policies that prioritize DEI to ensure all individuals have equal access to healthcare and the opportunity to live healthy lives.
